Layer
Marney Tower Classic Show
2006
|
Spring sprung bright and breezy for the Sunday following a miserable wet week. The venue, Layer Marney Tower, resplendent in sunshine formed a wonderful backdrop to the show. I arrived relatively early, so it wasn’t until after a good wander around the tower and its accompanying grounds and outbuildings, that I decided to peruse the vehicles on display. There was a reasonable display of motorcycles largely belonging to the CCMCC, with two very smart light-weight two-strokes also present to swell the ranks; a Coventry Eagle and a Villiers engined Excelsior. It seemed strange to sit on a Routemaster double–decker bus at a classic vehicle show, but these vehicles have been around for some 40 years, and are now largely, if only recently, out of commission-a wonderfully British institution. Another eye-catcher turning up later in the day under its own power, was a 1912 Renault convertible: “convertible”, apparently referring to the fact that it was a two-seater with a buck for trade use, or the addition of two rear seats to ‘convert’ it into a family car-clever chappies the French. A good show, in an interesting historic venue with wonderful views from the top of the tower- put it down on next year’s ‘to-do’list. ~ Curly ~ |
