A good number
of members turned up at the Live and Let Live for the run to the
Aldham Old Thyme Rallye. John Gosling having a bit of techie trouble
and breaking down 5 minutes from home, but made it on his Triumph
OK. The Police escort was an unexpected surprise which Pete managed
to keep quite until the day - well done Pete! Arriving safely we
parked our motor cycles in the usual potholed riddled area which
is put by for the display of motorcycles. With our excellent range
of fine machines nicely lined up and the club banner secured we
dispersed to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the various
exhibits (and to redeem our vouchers at the burger bar). The day,
which had started hot, was now almost unbearable with no break from
the iron melting heat soaring down on us all. Come about 1230 the
call for the motorcycle parade was made, shortly followed with the
roar of great old British motorcycles being kicked in to life. The
riders taking it in turn to have a short commentary on their machine
for the benefit of the watching public (the commentator being almost
wiped out when Curly locked the back wheel and 'snaked' to a halt),
followed by a ride around the arena with a line up down the middle.
After the parade the motor cycles where ridden back to the display
area and most of us decided a nice cool beer was in order, this
should have been an enjoyable part of the day considering the current
climate, but as usual at events like this the bar was under-manned
and almost out of beer! What is this country coming to? After about
an hour the heat became too much and we slowly drifted away, collecting
the excellent brass token of the event on the way out. I usually
always enjoy Aldham and most years you get some rain, this it was
just a little too hot. But as usual the exhibits are up to a high
standard and there's always something new, this year a 1944 American
tank that could shift! Next year can I fire the gun please! |
